504 COMPLIANCE

Under Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, schools must provide equal access to information. With UDL in mind, this means that learning design must provide the means for students to actively participate and access the same information.

For example, a student who has a visual impairment may need larger text size or even braille. Closed-captioning may be beneficial for a variety of students ranging from hearing needs, to those who want to make sure they don't miss out on key information.

CLOSED CAPTIONING
It is very easy to add captioning to videos on Youtube in the creator studio section. Here is an example of captioning added to this video.

While there are other tools for closed captioning, Youtube's is probably the easiest to use.

Within the creator studio, simply choose EDIT.

On the top of the screen, choose the Subtitles/CC tab. Do not go to the translations and transcripts menu on the left of the screen. Next, click the ADD NEW SUBTITLES button the right.

Youtube automatically adds the audio subtitles, but it is not always accurate. It also does not include punctuation.

In order to verify the accuracy of the subtitles, push the play button. On the side bar it is simple to edit the text.
