508 Compliance

508 COMPLIANCE

Related to Section 504, is Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act which deals specifically with design compliance for electronic communication. It applies specifically to federal agencies making the materials accessible in multiple formats. However, the US Department of Education now requires compliance from educational institutions that receive federal funds.

The guidelines include:

  •  Text alternatives for non-text content
  • Descriptive text or captioning available for videos
  • Keep layouts and navigation simple
  • Easy for users to see and hear content and to separate the foreground from the background, including making links easy to identify
  • Completely accessible from the keyboard 
  • Provide long time limits before a page times out
  • Do not design in a way known to cause seizures
  • Text should be readable and understandable
  • Help users avoid and correct mistakes
  • Compatible with past and future technology, including assistive tech
